SILVER LINING

My wife had been telling me for quite some time that she would like to visit our family jewelers in Karol Bagh for updating few items. I had been culprit of dilly dallying but yesterday I agreed on one condition that we would go by Metro. She agreed and I was very happy because it takes just 40 minutes by Metro while by car it takes more than an hour due to traffic as well as hassles of finding proper parking place. So off we went around 11:45 am.

We boarded the Metro and found that though it was not crowded like buses but there were no vacant seats. So we stood holding onto support rails. As the train moved a lady in mid 20s or so who was occupying a ladies seat got up and offered her place to my wife. She insisted that my wife sit while she would stand. I was quite surprised at her gesture. Within a minute or so a young boy of about 18 or 20 got up offering his place to me. I asked that lady to sit but she declined asking me to sit. I saw an elderly lady of my age or so standing a little ahead, so I asked her to take that place. She showed gratitude and sat down. And lo behold! Another young man of early 20s got up to make me sit at his place. While sitting I saw two young girls of 18 or so occupying two seats meant for “ Elderly or Handicapped Persons” and chit chatting away without any botheration for co-passengers who could be rightful persons to sit there.

After we finished our work we again boarded Metro for return journey. This time the train was very crowded. There was a man sitting along with a lady in place meant for two ladies and he made place by pushing towards other side asking my wife to sit. Again within a minute a young person of mid 20s got up offering me to take his place.

These two incidents made me feel that there is still silver lining and there still are some good Samaritans who care for elderly. This specially after my experience at that Bank branch which I wrote about in previous post.

May the breed of such persons prosper as each one of us will reach old age.

Yes Uncle Jack, there's always a silver lining. In fact I always offer my seat to the less abled and elder people and i know there r several other ppl like me who do the same.

We are not a hopeless generation after all. It is just a matter of good and bad experiences. Like you said, may the breed grow and flourish! :)

World is full of crap n bad things..
but, there exist few good ppl.. n they r the ones who r responsible for making this place still worth living.

I really feel good that if not much but few young ppl have retained sanity in them :)

So awesome! I think I see it very often in the metro. As long as the good experiences outweigh the bad ones, I guess we're okay!

Really nice to hear that people still care for the elderly! These days the youngsters and even middle aged people are so callous!! These simple things make life worth living!

hamaarethoughts.com said...

nice..I hope people behave like that all over the place...and give due respect to the elders!
In US I do see this courteous gesture all the time...like I came to the door ..and guy inside opened door for me as good gesture.. or me ..seeing a teenager holding a door for me in the school//
;) I like that~!
Specially I wud say help the handicapped and show coutesy to them.

Yes uncle there is still a lot of goodness left in the world. I still remember your post about the young man who did not bribe his way out of a traffic police man. So may there be more and more such people!

I agree with you and yes there is a silver lining. I guess we young people are having enough energies to stand for few minutes and it is our responsibility to give seat to old people :)

I'll say 'Good job!' to their parents. It all starts from the home. Although a small number, certainly the exception and not the rule, divert from the values taught them in the home.

Our youth is the hope of our land.

It's nice to see that people still do care. Although I didn't expect such courtesy from the Delhi public, no offence meant.

I am not sure, how I would have responded coz there have been instances when I have been sensitive to elder, and insensitive. And reading such instances fuel goodness. I am heading to the previous post. So saving words for there :)
