BRIBES

We speak so much about corruption but if you really search your heart honestly it will dawn on you that we all believe in bribes, at least for giving it. When we are very keen on getting something or want something to happen in our life, don’t we communicate with God that if this happens we will do this or that – acts like offering special prayers with sweets or keeping fast or giving to charity or any other such promise. Is that not like offering bribe to God? Why can we not do what we so promise always instead of making it special offer for some favour?

Very unique and intelligent post.

However, I think it all has to do with intention. I don't suppose we intend to 'bribe' God, rather we feel the gratitude genuinely when we wish to say extra prayers if God gives us the extra something.

i guess bribing is in the blood

i completely see your point Jack uncle..but the people who matter, refuse to see it...

I guess people engage in 'bribing' for many different reasons of their own. But just because many do it does not make it right.

As for offerings accompanying prayer. I think it's a tradition started ages ago practiced by different religions. And because it is a practice by humans then it takes on diverse human reasons or intent or purposes. As diverse as the race, culture, and creed of our world.

L M J :

If we say thanks to God for what is given to us, it is genuinely showing our gratitude but what do you say when we promise to do some act if God grants what we ask for? Why can we not do what we promise without any preconditions? Take care

PRAMODA :

Nice to see you and being with me on this issue. Take care

C D :

We need to do something to purify our blood, isn't it? Take care

SULAGNA :

It is true that those who matter turn a blind eye to it. Take care

ELLEN :

My point basically was that why should we put preconditions for doing good act, why can we not do it with our heart always? Let God grant us what we deserve and we should be grateful for that. And it is for every religion. Take care

yup really sad...but what to do its life and we are part of it....it is better to surrender sumtimes!

Ironically, what you mention here Jack is soooooooo true!
I abhor superstitions of all kinds yet my all time favourite game with bhagwaan ji is... “Get me this n I promise to ‘chadhao’ a parshad of so-n-so amount in your temple”

I guess certain things come like pre-conditioning...
Another sad but true facet of our lives!

We should try to reduce sadness as much as we can, isn't it? Take care

SURUCHI :

We all do it. Over the last few years I have overcome this habit and now I try to do what I feel should be done instead of promising God that in return of some blessing. Take care

Very true! I think by offering God material things, somewhere we are giving ourselves the confidence that our labor will bear fruits. And labor includes the actual act plus the offerings. The reassurance that someone up there will take care of everything...the only explanation I can think of!

Somebody please make corruption LEGAL.

Jack said...

ASWIN :

Welcome to my space. That may seem to be an easy way out to control it but do you seriously think it would work? We need to raise awareness level of masses to ensure no one gives bribes, thus corruption would get eradicated automatically, isn't it? I know it is a dream but unless we dream how do we reach our goals? Take care
