THOUGHTS AT 70

Well, my friends of blogsphere, I am not yet dead, though at 70 it does seem closer. I am going to share how does it feel on reaching this landmark.

When I sit back and reflect, I do feel I could have done differently in some situations to save the day. However I feel happy that I have not harmed anyone deliberately in my life and have done full justice to the job I was in. I always made it a point to ensure wellbeing of my subordinates so they could give undivided attention to their work. It is not that I am saint or a role model, I have made some mistakes and also acted under wrong influence at times. I have committed my share of sins, though not major ones, which I now feel could have been avoided. Enough of my story.

Coming to present and what is going on in our beloved country these days. I am sure that you will agree with me that for a successful and happy marriage not only both partners have to contribute but their parents and siblings too. You must be wondering if I have gone senile at this age to bring out this time tested principle. No, I have not gone round the bend. Let me give you my reasons for stating example of marriage. Living in a multi-cultural, multi- religious and multi-racial society is like marriage making each individual responsible to contribute to make society healthy, happy and secure. And the part played by parents and sibling for successful & happy marriage, falls on the shoulders of religious and political heads to lead followers to contribute towards healthy, happy and secure society. I invite you to tell me if you agree with me.

Reasons for returning of honours & awards is matter of an individual’s choice but I would like to ask those in news recently for the same to search their souls for following :

a)   Did they raise their voice during 1984 carnage of Sikhs or Godhra?

b)  Did they come out to speak against terrorists and those who nurtured them for bomb blasts in Mumbai/Delhi or any other place leading to deaths of so many innocents including children?

c)   Have they ever written anything or made any film propagating how to harmoniously live in a multi-cultural, multi-religious or multi-racial society?

Well, may I request you all to give your views on what I have said.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I have been thinking of writing for a long time but could not bring myself to do so for various reasons, mainly lethargy.

There had been a lot of commotion regarding hanging of Yakub. I am not here to say if hanging or death sentence is right but only to give my view on time taken to wrap up cases of terrorism and rape. I feel delay is likely due to defending lawyer of accused playing for more time in one way or the other like recalling witnesses who have already been examined for cross examination again or asking for dates on plea of sickness etc. Government should lay down time frame, may be 6 months, for completion of case in all courts – trial, appeal courts etc. There should be no postponement on flimsy grounds. There should be day to day hearing, may be by special court. ( This I had written about a month ago ).

Now coming to present, lately there has been a lot in news about criminal activities of GURUs or religious/ sect leaders. In my simple mind I think that if I take SANYAAS ie renounce the world, then why should I live in luxury? Why should I have interest in worldly affairs? Why should I have business or manufacturing empire? Why should I seek to make disciples? Why should I have any political affiliations? I should rather live like a hermit and seek true meaning of life as well as do whatever I can for the good of society as whole and not confine to just few followers. Coming to followers of such GURUs, I feel they lack understanding true meaning of life. If one is true to his or her kith & kin, does his or her duty with complete heart in it, does not harm anyone except in line of duty will not need to seek guidance of any self styled GURU. Duty does not just mean work one does, but towards society and environment also.  Media also gives a lot of free publicity to such GURUs by keeping them in prime news.

Currently there is an agitation going on for reservation of particular sect of society. I am all for upliftment of downtrodden but do we give reservation for everything like largess to those who are well to do? Our leaders have not given thought to long time affect of reservation policy when it was formulated at the time of independence. It should have been stipulated for a set period of time, say 50 years, in which even new more than TWO Generations could have utilised it’s benefits to come up in living standards. Even now we need to   

link reservations to economic status and not to any caste or sect. What is the justification of giving benefits of reservations to a person who is millionaire or belongs to a rich well to do family?

ARE WE NOT ASKING FOR IT?

A few days ago I had gone to market when I saw a tree had fallen on a car parked near it. It had got uprooted due to strong hurricane winds. On closer look I found that it had to happen as the base of the tree was surrounded by cemented walk right upto it’s base. How can we expect a tree to have strength in it’s roots which cannot spread to hold it on ground firmly? Are we not asking for such accidents by ignoring need for enough earth around the base of a tree? You may have read many reports in newspapers also on this issue recently.

Reports of adopting or offering help for using unfair means in entrance examinations for joining courses in medicine ie MBBS or BDS make me wonder what kind of Doctors will we have in future when such persons somehow complete the studies by passing final examinations, may be again by same methods. Those who facilitate adoption of such methods are MURDERERS. They are not human beings but DEVILS due to their greed for money. Also would those who gain admissions by making huge donations have any other aim than making money? Would they be true to their NOBEL profession? And I say again that we are asking for such situation due to our apathy.

What do you say about racket of admissions in pre-nursery, nursery or KG classes by misusing quota meant for EWS children? How do the schools justify change over to normal category with change names etc after some time has elapsed from such admissions? Are we not teaching our children right from that tender age that CHEATING is way of life? 

SOME THOUGHTS

It has been over a month that I wrote anything here while there are so many thoughts churning around in my mind. Let me try to put across some recent ones.

I am unable to find words to say how I feel about Nepal tragedy. All I can say is May God protect everyone. What pains me more is the way some of our prominent persons have been saying that Delhi is prone to much more damage if any earthquake strikes as most of the buildings do not conform to safety standards while most of them are persons who are also talking loudly for regularisation of unauthorised colonies for their political gains.  Why these double standards?

I decided to get Aadhar Card made for self and wife as our government is insisting for the same, though not for any other reason. So after filling due forms and attaching photocopies of required documents I went to deposit the same at one of close Aadhar centres but found that that they accept only 60 applications a day from 9 in the morning. So next day I reached there at 8:30 in the morning only to find more than 100 persons already in queue. On asking I learnt that they start queuing up from 5 in the morning. I do not know if my age and health will permit me to do that. Should the government not make it more convenient for elderly persons who wish to obey rule to make the said card?

Recently media has been giving a lot of coverage to Salman Khan case which has been going on for more than a decade. I agree with their projection that he is a good actor as well as a good person as per what is known about his social activities but does that mean that if found guilty he should be condoned of his acts? Will the media also take up cudgels for many more persons who face similar criminal charges but are also good human beings? Should the law not be applicable to each of us without any prejudices?
